Preparing for Hurricane Joaquin – Being ready and staying safe…

The Executive members of the Emergency Measures Organization held a meeting at 12 noon today to discuss the potential impact of Hurricane ‎’Joaquin’ on Bermuda, and assess Government’s and other relevant agencies’ preparedness. The overall situation will be reassessed following the 12 noon weather advisory tomorrow Saturday 3rd October 2015.

New Police Vessel. “Heron 3”

The Bermuda Police Service has taken delivery of a new police vessel. “Heron 3” is a 32’ Boston Whaler that replaces its predecessor of the same name. The former boat, a 27’ Boston Whaler was taken out of service last December following a commissioned marine survey that revealed structural hull failure beyond repair. The boat was 18 years old.

The new “Heron 3” was specially equipped for police patrols by Brunswick Commercial Government Products Ltd., based in the USA. It is powered by twin Evinrude 300HP G2 outboard engines that were purchased through the local Evinrude dealer, Bermuda Marine and Supply. The total cost of the vessel is $245,000 and funding was made available in the Police capital budget for 2015/16.

Man Pleads Guilty to Burglary Offenses

Today a 42 year old man of no fixed abode was put before the courts for a series of burglaries that took place on the island in recent weeks. The man pled guilty to 9 counts of burglary, 1 count of going equipped, 1 count of escaping lawful custody and one count of resisting arrest. The arrest of the 42 year man, is a result of a targeted investigation centered around the neighborhood affected by recent series of break ins. The Bermuda Police Service would like to thank the public for their assistance, as we know that personal and invasive nature of burglaries.

Somerset Police Station Temporarily Closed

The Bermuda Police Service would like to advise the public that the Somerset Police Station will be closed immediately for urgent repairs. As a result, western officers will be operating out of the Dockyard Office located at 2 Sally Port Lane, North Basin, Dockyard next to Making Waves. A phone box will be affixed to the wall outside of the Somerset Police Station to connect the user to the Station Duty Officer who will be located at the Dockyard office. The Telephone number will remain 234-1010.

Microsoft Scam

Once again the Bermuda Police Service renewing its appeal to the public to remain vigilant regarding phone calls, e-mails and other correspondence from unknown persons that attempt to obtain personal information or other sensitive data.

One common scam involves unknown callers offering to help residents with alleged glitches reportedly affecting their home computers. These calls are believed to originate overseas, with the fraudulent callers often claiming to represent the ‘Microsoft Windows operating system.’

When such callers are challenged, they often become more insistent and confrontational. It is strongly recommended that any similar unsolicited communication be ignored.

Burglary Advisory

The Bermuda Police Service  would like to  advise the public of a  recent spate breaking and entry reports in Warwick and Southampton specifically in the areas of Middle Road, the Lighthouse Hill area, also houses on the surrounding the Railway trail. It should be noted that many of these events are taking place during the day and as such, police are advising the public to be on the look out for suspicious individuals lurking around homes.

Officers certified as G.R.E.A.T Instructors.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Antoine Daniels recently congratulated three members of the Bermuda Police Service who have recently and successfully completed an intensive eight day training course to become instructors in the G.R.E.A.T. (Gang Resistance Education and Training) Programme.

The programme a joint initiative between the Ministry of National Security and The Bermuda Police Service was reintroduced into the Islands schools in 2014, and since then has experienced tremendous success.
