In a press conference held earlier today, Supt. Sean Field-Lament updated the media on police related incidents, which took place over the Christmas holiday weekend.
At the same press conference, Acting Det. Insp. Jason Smith issued a statement followed by an appeal for witnesses regarding the shooting incident, which took place last night [28-Dec] in the St Monica’s Road Pembroke area. Their full statements can be read below.
The Bermuda Police Service recognizes that on Christmas Day a number of the island residents converge on Elbow Beach for festive celebrations.This results in vehicles being illegally parked on South Road and surrounding areas causing major traffic delays and safety hazards. In addition, it inhibits the response time of emergency vehicles attending possible life threatening incidents.
Sergeant Jason Smith - On the 14th of December 2016, the peace and tranquility in the neighborhood of Morgan Road was interrupted when two males riding on a dark colored motorcycle rode up from Harbour Road and opened fire on eight individuals congregating on a wall outside of a private residence. This resulted in a 17 year old male being treated for non-life threatening injuries.
The Bermuda Police Service can now confirm the death of 72 year-old George Ward of Sandys. It appears that Mr. Ward fell from Gibbs Hill Lighthouse on Thursday December 17th at approximately 3:40pm resulting in Mr. Ward being pronounced dead on the scene by an on-call doctor.
A Family Liaison Officer has been appointed to the family and the Bermuda Police Service extends our sincere condolences to the family and friends of the deceased.
First responders attended a report of the incident that took place at Gibbs Hill Lighthouse in Southampton a few minutes before 4pm today, Thursday December 17th.
Upon police arrival it was ascertained that a male fell from the top of the lighthouse and soon thereafter he was pronounced dead. No further information will be given until the next of kin has been notified.
As part of the new Strategic Plan released by the BPS last week, a review was conducted of the Bermuda Reserve Police (BRP) to streamline the command structure and create a more efficient supervisory and management system. Supervisory ranks in the Reserves, which traditionally mirrored the same ranks in the full-time police, have been re-titled and given new insignia to be worn on the uniform.
As we enter the festive season, the Bermuda Police Service would like to remind members of the public to be vigilant as they go about their shopping or other activities.
Residents are encouraged to always lock their doors and windows when leaving home, even for a few minutes. If leaving home for an extended period of time, ask a neighbour or family member to watch the house. Displays of holiday gifts should not be visible through windows or doors.
At a few minutes before 9pm Tuesday, police responded to an incident that took place on Morgan Road in Warwick. It appears that 2 males on a motorcycle road up to 6 males sitting on a wall in the area and opened fire.
This resulted in a sixteen year old male being shot in his leg. He was taken to the hospital where he is being treated for non-life threatening injuries.
Acting Inspector Carl Gibbons - Good afternoon everyone, and thank you for coming. I would just like to take a moment to quickly acknowledge a few persons in
attendance prior to this brief presentation. We have Chief Inspector Calvin Smith who is the Officer in Charge of uniform personnel in the East, West and Central areas. Ms. Angela Vincent, the guidance counselor from Victor Scott Primary. Edward Smith, the father of Xy-Unn Simmons; Consellow Ming, the mother of Monét Daniels-Ming; as well as officers from ‘B’ Watch central.
At approximately 6:45pm yesterday, police responded to a report of a disturbance at Quarry Road in Hamilton Parish. It was reported that four males arrived outside of a residence brandishing what appeared to be machetes and bats looking for an unknown male.
Officers arrived at the residence however the males left the location prior to police arrival in a car and we can report no one was injured as a result of this incident.
