Detective Superintendent Sean Field-Lament of the Bermuda Police Service (BPS) Crime Division - “I wish to continue to raise awareness of the Bermuda business community in regards to an emerging cyber threat named ‘Business Email Compromise’ (BEC), also called ‘CEO fraud’.

The Organized and Economic Crime Department (OECD) has now received four reports in the last 2 weeks from local businesses regarding significant cyber-enabled fraud incidents.

The Bermuda Police Service continues to advise members of the public to be vigilant regarding deceptive social media accounts impersonating Government officials.

These fake social media profiles are being used to contact individuals and make demands of money for alleged Government initiatives and proposals.

The Bermuda Police Service (BPS) wishes to advise the Bermuda business community in regards to an emerging cyber threat named ‘Business Email Compromise’ (BEC), also called ‘CEO fraud’, which has so far resulted in the loss or attempted loss of significant sums from local businesses.

Organised Crime Groups make use of publicly available contact information to collect email data of company executives and accounts department employees. An email impersonating the executive is sent to the accounts department employee, which requests an urgent overseas payment to be made.

Renewed Advisory: Safety Tips While Out Socialising

In light of the voice note circulating through social media and WhatsApp recently that suggests women have had foreign substances unknowingly placed into their beverages at liquor licensed establishments, the Bermuda Police Service would like to remind members of the public of the following safety tips to consider while out socialising.

Ideally, if going out to socialise, go with a friend or group of friends – not alone.

If out socialising in a group, stay together. Look after your friends and don’t go off on your own.

Reports of Women’s Drinks ‘Spiked’ at Liquor Licensed Premises

Police are aware of a voice note circulating through social media and WhatsApp that suggests that there are cases of women who have had foreign substances unknowingly placed into their beverages at liquor licensed establishments.

It should be noted that to date there have been no reports of this nature recently submitted to the police.

Two Teen Boys Arrested in Connection With Scooters Stolen from TCD

Detectives are currently conducting inquiries regarding three 50cc scooters recently reported stolen from the Transport Control Department (TCD) on North Street in the City of Hamilton.

The three scooters were secured in a shipping container on the premises and used for Project Ride.

It appears that all three were removed sometime between 6:30pm Thursday, April 5th and 9am Saturday, April 7th.

Reported Medical Emergency

At approximately 1pm today, (Sunday, 8th April, 2018) police received notification of a medical emergency onboard Delta flight 561.

It was reported that a male passenger was suffering from a heart condition. The flight was a routed flight to Bermuda and not a diversion. The plane landed at 1:20pm without incident.  

The man was taken to the hospital via ambulance and is being treated for his condition.

Flight Diversion

Police responded to a report of an unruly passenger onboard a flight that was on route from London Gatwick to Cancun Mexico. It appears that a 39 year old male British National was arrested and removed from the plane for being extremely intoxicated and unruly.

The suspect was assessed by on scene medical personnel but refused any kind of medical attention but was extremely unruly and whilst in custody threw himself to the ground and struck his head on the floor, sustaining what appears to be a minor self-inflicted head injury.

Reported Single Vehicle Collision in Southampton

At 8am this morning (Thursday) police responded to a report of a single vehicle road traffic collision that took place in the area of South Road and Horseshoe Road in Southampton. Details are still emerging at this point but it appears that the driver of a van lost control of his vehicle resulting in the van overturning. Traffic was then diverted away from the area whilst the scene was being processed.

The 47 year old driver of the vehicle was taken to the hospital for injuries that do not appear to be life-threatening.
