Advisory: Online Scams

As a result of recent on-line scamming reports, the Financial Crime Unit of the Bermuda Police Service would like to remind the public to remain vigilant in their dealings with vendors when shopping on the internet. The public are advised not to send ‘wire transfers’ to overseas vendors for payment of goods you have not seen or received.

Furthermore the public are advised to be wary of any vendor who utilizes a generic e-mail domain such as gmail.com, hotmail.com or yahoo.com. Recent losses to the Bermuda public have related to the sale of heavily discounted ‘unlocked’ cellular phones and pets from overseas vendors.

Four Men in Court on Firearm Charges

Four men appeared in Magistrates’ Court today in relation to a firearms incident that took place on the 28th of February 2012 on Mission Lane in Pembroke where a man received injuries as a result of this incident.

27 year old Jahkeil Samuels, 23 year old Ronniko Burchall and 22 year old Jamin Saltus were all charged with:

  • Conspiracy to commit murder.
  • Attempted murder.
  • Using a firearm to commit an indictable offence.

Temporary Phone Numbers for Main Police Stations

Please be advised that the normal telephone numbers for contacting the main police stations are not working at this time. In the interim, members of the public who may need to contact the police should use the following numbers instead:

  • Hamilton Police Station: 799-1362
  • Somerset Police Station: 799-1366
  • Southside Police Station: 799-1415

The public will be advised at the earliest opportunity when the normal telephone numbers for these police stations are operational again. The Bermuda Police Service apologizes for any inconvenience caused.

Ongoing Witness Appeal: Michael Phillips Murder Investigation

Acting Detective Chief Inspector Calvin Smith – The Bermuda Police Service is continuing to appeal for witnesses or anyone that can help with the investigation into the fatal shooting of 42 year old Michael Phillips outside the Mid-Atlantic Boat Club in Devonshire around 9:30pm Sunday, October 14th 2012.

To date the response from the public has not been as good as we would have hoped. We are aware that approximately 30 persons were in the establishment at the time. While many of those persons might believe that there is not much they can offer, I want to assure them that the smallest piece of information can assist with this investigation.

Update: Man Fatally Shot Outside Mid-Atlantic Boat Club

Superintendent James Howard - On behalf of the Bermuda Police Service, I wish to begin by conveying sincere condolences to the family and friends of 42 year old Mr. Michael Steven Phillips who sadly lost his life on Sunday evening. 

As I reported previously, about 9:35pm last evening Mr. Phillips was shot a number of times whilst outside in the parking area of the Mid-Atlantic Boat Club, which is located on North Shore Road, Devonshire.

Superintendent James Howard - At 9:35pm on Sunday, October 14th, as a result of calls made to the police COMOPS unit, several officers were dispatched to the area of the Mid-Atlantic Boat Club in Devonshire where it was reported that a firearms incident had taken place.

As a result, a 42-year-old male was taken to the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital. Unfortunately, that male has now succumbed to his injuries. At this time we have our forensic officers, as well as officers from the Serious Crime Unit conducting preliminary inquiries into the incident.

Invitation to Tender: CCTV Mesh Network System

The Bermuda Police Service (BPS) is inviting tenders from established vendors for the implementation, maintenance and monitoring of a mesh network system of CCTV (Closed Circuit Television) cameras and DVR for coverage across the island. The CCTV system should allow the BPS to monitor and record identified crimes and illegal activities.

Police Week 2012: Commissioner for a Day Winners

On Wednesday, October 10th as part of Police Week 2012, nine students from various schools were ‘Commissioners for a Day’ after submitting winning entries to the annual short essay and artwork competition held by the Bermuda Police Service. The competition was open to all public and private primary, middle and senior schools across the island. This year’s Police Week theme is ‘Building Partnerships for a Safer Community’ and the primary school students were asked to produce police related artwork, while the middle and senior schools students were asked to write a short essay. Investigation Ongoing Into the Disappearance of Rudolph Smith

The murder inquiry regarding the disappearance of 41 year-old Mr. Rudolph (Rudy) Lamar Smith is ongoing. Mr. Smith, described as brown skinned of slim build, 5’8” tall with close black hair, brown eyes and a goatee, was last seen alive around 7pm Monday July 9th 2012, walking in the area of One-Way Deepdale in Pembroke parish.

Investigators continue to urge anyone that may have any information about the last movements or whereabouts of Mr. Smith, whether they believe it to be important or not, to contact the Serious Crime Unit on telephone number 247-1739 or the confidential and anonymous Crime Stoppers hotline at 800-8477.

Search Warrant Executed & Man Arrested

Around 3:45pm on Thursday, October 11th police officers executed a search warrant at a North Street, Pembroke residence in relation to an ongoing investigation. As a result, one male was arrested at that location. Inquiries into the matter are ongoing.
