The Bermuda Police Service took the report of a suspected firearm very seriously and mounted an immediate and significant response involving officers from multiple departments including the Serious Crime Unit, Armed Response Vehicles and the Marine Unit. Extensive enquiries were made and the Bermuda Police Service is satisfied that the presence of a weapon could not be verified. The Bermuda Police Service appreciates the cooperation of all those who were inconvenienced as a result of the operation.
Cup Match was a very well policed event with 150 officers in and around the Somerset Cricket Club grounds over the two days. During that time we received no complaints of cannabis smoking from any member of the public. In addition, senior Police officers were at Cup Match for extended periods and did not observe cannabis smoking taking place. The Bermuda Police Service enforces the law whenever there are breaches and continues to encourage any member of the public who sees or suspects illegal activity taking place to report it to Police immediately.
Around 2:50pm on Tuesday, Police received information of the presence of a possible weapon at the cruise ship terminal at Penno’s Wharf in St. George’s. Efforts were made to locate an individual that was believed to be off the cruise ship as well as the item in question. The search resulted in a delay in some passengers being transported back to the cruise ship by the tender. Police inquires are ongoing and further information will be released as the investigation progresses. One individual off the cruise ship is assisting Police with their inquiries.
The Financial Crime Unit of The Bermuda Police Service would like to remind members of the public to be vigilant when making any purchases using the internet.
In the past week the Service has received complaints from members of the public who appear to have been defrauded in such schemes. In two of these cases the victim responded to locally based internet adverts hoping to purchase a puppy from an overseas breeder.
Around 7:40pm on Sunday, Police responded to a reported firearm incident in the Boaz Island, Sandys parish area. Officers attended the area; however at that time nothing was found to substantiate the report. Inquiries at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital revealed that no one has been admitted with gunshot wounds. An investigation into the matter is underway. The Bermuda Police Service is continuing its investigation into the shooting of a 44 year old man near Cambridge Road on Friday afternoon. The victim is listed as being in stable condition at the hospital. Acting Chief Inspector Calvin Smith of the Serious Crime Unit is leading a team of detectives in this investigation, and they currently have a 19 year old man in police custody in connection with the case.
From Assistant Commissioner of Police David Mirfield - Police are continuing to appeal for witnesses to a confirmed firearm incident that took place around 5:10pm on Friday, near the junction of Somerset Road and Cambridge Road in Sandys parish. The victim, a 44 year old Sandys parish man, remains in the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital and at last check was in stable condition in the Intensive Care Unit.
