Sudden Death

Police and first responders attended a medical emergency at Scott's Hill Road in Sandys a few minutes after 11 this morning. Upon police arrival it was ascertained that a 20 year old Sandys man was in a non-responsive state. The Sandys man was rushed to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital where he was certified dead by a hospital physician. No further information will be given until the next of kin has been notified. Foul play is not suspected.

Serious Injury RTC

Police responded to a road traffic collision which occurred on Monday, December 27th around 2:32am at the junction of Harbour Road and Manse Road in Paget. It appears that a car with three male occupants collided with a wall. Two of the three were injured; one of the injured has been flown overseas for further medical treatment, the other received superficial cuts and bruises. However, the driver of the vehicle was arrested on suspicion of driving whilst impaired. Inquiries into this incident are underway.

Bermuda’s 13th Road Traffic Fatality

The Bermuda Police Service can now confirm the death of 24 year old Leaha Lanfear. Ms. Lanfear was pronounced dead at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore Maryland on Tuesday December 21, 2010. She succumbed to injuries sustained in a serious road traffic collision that occurred around 3:55am Thursday, December 16 on East Broadway (Crow Lane) near the junction with Corkscrew Hill. The Bermuda Police Service extends condolences to the family and friends of Ms Lanfear. Inquiries into this incident are ongoing.

At Home - Always lock your doors and windows when leaving your house, even for a few minutes. If you leave home for an extended period of time, ask a neighbour or family member to watch the house and collect any deliveries. Displays of holiday gifts should not be visible through your windows or doors.

Strangers At Your Door - Be aware that criminals sometimes pose as couriers or persons soliciting donations for charitable causes. Always ask for identification and ask how the donated funds will be used. If you are not satisfied, do not donate. Only donate to recognised charitable organisations.

Fatal RTC

The Bermuda Police Service can now confirm the death of 60 year old Gladwin Gilbert. Mr. Gilbert was pronounced dead at 11am on Tuesday, December 14th 2010 in the Intensive Care Unit of the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital. He succumbed to injuries sustained in a serious road traffic collision that occurred around 10:20am Friday, December 10th on Parsons Road in Pembroke when the pedal cycle he was riding was in collision with a motorcycle ridden by a 59 year old Devonshire woman.

Students Arrested on School Bus

Around 8:20am on Tuesday, Police responded to a report of suspicious activity onboard a school bus. Whilst enroute to the school, the bus driver allegedly smelled marijuana and stopped the bus at the nearest Police premises. Police officers arrived on scene a short time later and were alerted to the suspected drug use. As a result, the officers searched the bus with the assistance of a Police K9 unit and a quantity of suspected controlled drug was seized. Three students were subsequently arrested; two on suspicion of possessing a controlled drug and one for using offensive words. Inquiries into this incident are ongoing.

Update - Fatal RTC

The Bermuda Police Service can now confirm the death of 39 year old Kirk Simons of Sandys parish. Mr. Simons suffered fatal injuries after the motorcycle he was riding was in collision with a taxi on Harbour Road in Paget near the junction with Chapel Road around 1:45am on Saturday. The Bermuda Police Service extends condolences to the family & friends of Mr. Simons. Inquiries into this incident are ongoing. Police are continuing to appeal for any witnesses to this collision to contact Inspector Phil Lewis on 295-0011.

Around 10:20am on Friday, Police and first responders attended a reported serious road traffic collision resulting in injury on Parsons Road in Pembroke involving a motorcycle and a pedal cycle. Details about the collision remain unclear; however the pedal cyclist, a 60 year old man as well as the motorcycle rider, a 59 year old Devonshire woman were injured and taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital via ambulance for treatment.

Around 1:45am on Saturday, Police and first responders attended a reported serious road traffic collision on Harbour Road in Paget near the junction with Chapel Road involving a taxi and a motorcycle. It appears that the taxi was exiting Newstead hotel and the motorcycle was traveling along Harbour Road when the vehicles collided. The rider of the motorcycle, a 39 year old Sandys parish man, sustained serious injuries and was rushed to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital via ambulance; however he subsequently succumbed to his injuries.

Sudden Death of Hugh Melwood

The Bermuda Police Service can confirm that on Thursday 9th December an autopsy was performed on the body of Mr. Hugh Melwood, a 35 year old Jamaican National. Several pellets which contained what is believed to be a quantity of controlled drug were recovered from within the body. It is suspected that they may have contributed to his death. The deceased recently returned to Bermuda from an overseas trip.
