BPS Continues Work With Partner Agencies to Tackle Financial Crime

The Bermuda Police Service (BPS) would like to take this opportunity to share the “Bermuda 2020 Report on Money Laundering and Terrorist Financing Risk Assessments.”
The BPS works with partner agencies within the National Anti-Money Laundering Committee to both combat and deter criminal use of our financial systems, and our collective input into this report helps inform decision making at all levels within our community.
We continue to work tirelessly to prevent & detect money laundering & terrorist financing in all its various forms, with the continued development of our staff, collaboration with local & international partners, and by the prosecution of offenders.

Detectives are actively investigating 11 reported burglaries and two attempted burglaries at separate service stations, grocery, electronic & jewellery business establishments in various locations across the island.
Many of these reported incidents have occurred within the pre-dawn hours, between the hours of 3am and 5:30am, at the following locations:-
• P-Tech, Reid Street, City of Hamilton (12th April)
• RUBiS Terceira’s, North Shore Road, Smith’s parish (22nd April)
• Crawl Hill Esso Tiger Market, Hamilton parish (23rd April)
• Collector’s Hill Esso Tiger Market, Devonshire (25th April)
• Sunglass & Watch Shop, Reid Street, City of Hamilton (26th April)
• RUBiS Causeway (Blue Hole Hill), Hamilton parish (26th April)
• Warwick Esso Tiger Market, Middle Road, Warwick (27th April)
• Audio Visual Ltd, Mangrove Bay Road, Sandys (10th May)
• Red Laser Electronics, Bakery Lane, Pembroke (14th May – attempted burglary)
• Empire Grocery, North Shore Road, Devonshire (14th May)
• Art Mel’s Restaurant, St. Monica’s Road, Pembroke (14th May)
• Astwood Dickinson, Front Street, City of Hamilton (between.15th & 16th May – attempted burglary)
• RUBiS Warwick Service Station, South Road, Warwick (16th May)
A quantity of Apple products (including Apple TVs, watches, iPhones, AirPods, iPads), JBL earbuds, other electronic devices, cigarettes, jewellery, and cash has been stolen.
Those responsible on the varying occasions involved 2-3 persons described as all wearing dark coloured clothing, dark coloured helmets & visors, ranging between 5 feet 8 inches and 6 feet tall, riding dark coloured motorcycles. They are seen on CCTV to be in possession of tools to break the glass to gain entry into these premises.
Firstly, the Bermuda Police Service (BPS) is reminding all businesses & homeowners to ensure their alarm systems and security cameras are in working order and to report suspicious persons or activities in your neighbourhood, service station area, or commercial area by dialing 911 or 211 as soon as possible. We also want to remind businesses to not leave large amounts of cash on the property.
More importantly, the BPS is seeking the assistance of the public who may have any information about these incidents, no matter how insignificant it may seem, to please be encouraged to call the Criminal Investigations Department on 247-1744, e-mail 211@bps.bm, tell a police officer you may know or submit an anonymous tip to Crime Stoppers confidential hotline 800-8477 (TIPS). You may also visit the website www.crimestoppers.bm.
We would also like to remind the public that, it is an offence to receive/handle goods that are suspected to be stolen and if you suspect that you have purchased stolen property, please contact the BPS via the information above.
Teen Male Injured in Reported Disturbance

Around 9:13 p.m. on Wednesday, May 17th, 2023, police received reports of a disturbance at Rambling Lane, Pembroke.
It was reported that one of the persons involved was armed with a knife.
Upon their arrival officers were informed that a 17-year-old male had been stabbed in the face and was transported by private motorcar to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital for treatment.
Checks at the hospital confirmed the victim sustained a laceration to his right cheek. His injury was not deemed to be life threatening.
Details on the circumstances pertaining to this incident remain limited at this time. The only information available on the suspect is that the person is a male, approximately 6’ tall and of muscular build.

Overturned Car, Smith's Parish

Around 10:15pm on Sunday 14th May 2023, police and other emergency service personnel were dispatched to a report of a single vehicle collision, on Harrington Sound Road in the area of Manor House Drive in Smith’s.
It was reported, that a motor car involved in a collision had overturned, causing several of the occupants to be trapped inside.
The occupants were eventually freed from the vehicle and were attended to by EMTs at the scene, however no serious injuries were reported.
Traffic diversions had been put in place until the overturned vehicle was removed from the scene, and regular traffic flow has been restored in the area.
5th Road Fatality of 2023

The Bermuda Police Service can now confirm that the 30-year-old male found unconscious on the roadway just west of the junction of Trinity Church Road and North Shore Road, Hamilton Parish, around 3:15 this morning has succumbed to his injuries.
This matter is now being investigated as a suspected hit and run fatal road traffic collision and marks the island’s fifth road traffic fatality for this year.
Residents who may have heard or seen any suspicious activity in the area either before or shortly after the time of the collision, no matter how insignificant you think it may be, are urged to please contact the Investigating Officer, Police Constable, Deforest Evans, on 717-0860 or, via e-mail, devans@bps.bm.
You may also call the main police number 295-0011 or, the independent and confidential Crime Stoppers number, 800-8477. If you’re more comfortable doing so, please share the information with a police officer you know.

Suspected Hit and Run Collision [Updated]

At approximately 3:15 a.m. on Sunday, May 14th, 2023, police received a 911 report of an unresponsive person lying in the roadway, just west of the junction of North Shore Road and Trinity Church Road, Hamilton Parish.
Upon arrival officers found the person, a thirty year old male, remained unresponsive. He bore head and facial injuries and was having difficulty breathing.
He was transported to hospital by ambulance.
It is believed the male may have been the victim of a hit and run collision.
An investigation into this matter has commenced and anyone with information is asked to contact Police Sergeant Nigel Gittens by calling 717-2182 or, via e-mail, ngittens@bps.bm.

Reported Serious Two Vehicle Collision in Devonshire

Around 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 13th, 2023, Police and EMS personnel were dispatched to a reported two vehicle road traffic collision involving a motor car and a motorcycle at the junction of Palmetto Road and Parsons Lane, Devonshire.
It was reported that the female motorcycle rider was traveling west along Palmetto Road when she collided with the motorcar which was exiting Parsons Lane making a right hand turn, east onto Palmetto Road.
The motorcycle rider sustained head and facial injuries, but remained conscious and alert while being attended to at the scene by EMTs. She was subsequently transported by ambulance to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital.
The motorcycle was extensively damaged while the motorcar was left with damage to the right rear.
The female driver and the other two occupants of the motorcar were not reported to be injured.
Traffic diversions were implemented while the scene was forensically processed.

Reported Serious Single Vehicle Car Crash in Warwick

Around 10:05 p.m. on Friday, May 12 th, 2023, police received a report of an overturned car near the junction of Frith Estate Road and South Road, Warwick.
It appears the 30-year-old male driver lost control of the vehicle and struck a boundary wall, which resulted in the vehicle being flipped onto its roof.
The driver suffered a minor injury to the nose.
He was subsequently arrested on suspicion of driving whilst impaired.
Traffic was restricted to one lane for a short period while the scene was cleared.

Detective Constable McKeon Stevens to Attend U.S. Secret Service Training

On May 11, 2023, U.S. Consul General Karen Grissette met with Detective Constable McKeon Stevens of the Bermuda Police Service (BPS) to congratulate him on his selection by the U.S. Consulate to attend a United States Secret Service training in Washington D.C. next week.
The United States government is fully funding Detective Constable Stevens to participate in this U.S. Secret Service training opportunity, which will strengthen existing relationships between the United States and Bermuda. “I am excited about this new opportunity and look forward to the experience,” said DC Stevens, an 18-year veteran of the Bermuda Police Service.
U.S. Consul General Karen Grissette has prioritized further deepening the already strong security partnership with Bermuda during her tenure. “I am honored to congratulate DC McKeon Stevens on his selection for this training opportunity with security counterparts from across the United States and around the world.
We were delighted the U.S. Secret Service opened enrollment to an officer from Bermuda. This course is yet another demonstration of our commitment to working collaboratively with Bermuda to confront security challenges and to strengthen the special U.S.-Bermuda relationship,” said the U.S. Consul General.
“The U.S. Secret Service is an active participant in the global law enforcement community and joins in-stride with our partners’ efforts on any opportunity to achieve the highest levels of public safety and security,” said U.S. Secret Service New York Field Office Special Agent in Charge Patrick J. Freaney.
“The invaluable information exchange and sharing of best practices amongst the Secret Service and local law enforcement leaders from around the world serves to only benefit the global collective, and I am grateful to the Bermuda Police Service for their partnership.”
The selection of Detective Constable Stevens, who is part of Bermuda’s Special Branch Intelligence Division, was affirmed and supported by Detective Superintendent Sean Field Lament, the officer in charge of the Specialist Investigations Division with the BPS.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Antoine Daniels took the opportunity to; “thank U.S Consul General Karen Grissette for affording a member of the BPS a place on the prestigious United States Secret Service training Seminar due to be held in Washington D.C next week.
He also extended his congratulations to Constable McKeon Stevens on his selection and the unique opportunity to enhance his skills and knowledge.
This will not only improve our partnership working, but additionally the interoperability across law enforcement agencies, particularly when U.S dignitaries are visiting the island.”
Two Motorcyclists Seriously Injured in Southampton Collision

Around 10:40pm on Tuesday 9th May, 2023, police and other emergency personnel were dispatched to the scene of a serious collision on Middle Road Southampton near Scenic Heights Road.
Reports suggest that two men, both traveling on motorcycles were involved in a collision, resulting in serious injury to both riders.
The men were taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital via ambulance for treatment of what has been described as life threatening injuries.
The road has been temporarily closed, while Traffic Accident Investigators process the scene. Traffic diversions have been put in place at Camp Hill Road and Scenic Heights Road.
The roads were reopened for normal traffic flow, shortly after 1am.
