The Bermuda Police Service received a report of the missing crewman – Mr. Angelo Faliva - on Friday, 27th November 2009. A ‘Missing Person’ Report has been initiated. Mr. Faliva is an Italian who worked on a Bermuda Registered Cruise liner - Coral Princess - as a First Cook. The Cruise liner was sailing from Aruba to Cartagena, Colombia between November 25th and 26th 2009. Mr. Faliva was last seen alive by a worker between 6am and 6:30am that morning as the ship neared Cartagena. This time coincides with a passenger who is believed to have sighted a person in the water at the rear of the ship.
On 9th November 2009 the Bermuda Police Service (BPS) announced the establishment of a task force within the Vulnerable Persons Unit to conduct investigations into offences relating to child internet pornography.
We reported that several persons had been identified including a probationary Police Constable who has now been dismissed from the Service. This morning 41 year old Paul Boorman appeared at Magistrates’ Court charged with 15 counts relating to accessing child pornography.
Enquiries into this case and others will continue. The Bermuda Police Service takes the matter very seriously indeed and is committed to taking every opportunity to bring offenders to justice.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Paul Wright - The murder of Kumi Harford in the early morning of Saturday 5 December 2009 as he was driving home represents the 23rd confirmed incident involving firearms so far this year. Gun violence in Bermuda has resulted in 14 people being injured so far this year, tragically two of them suffering fatal wounds.
The Bermuda Police Service can now confirm the death of 30 year old Kumi Harford of Pembroke. Mr. Harford was shot and killed in the St. Monica's Mission area of Pembroke around 5am Saturday. The investigation into the fatal shooting is ongoing. A press conference to update the media will take place soon.
Local investigators are being assisted by a crime scene examiner and a forensic pathologist from the USA.
There continues to be a high profile Police presence in the area with the Police Mobile Command Unit stationed at the scene and Community Action Team officers conducting house to house inquiries.
Around 5am today, Police received a report of gunshots in the St. Monica’s Mission area of Pembroke. Units responded along with an ambulance and a 30 year old Pembroke man was discovered suffering from gun shot wounds. He was taken to KEMH where he later died as a result of his injuries. No information as to the identity of the victim will be given until the next of kin has been notified.
The Bermuda Police Service is entering the Police vessel ‘Guardian’ in the 2009 Christmas Boat Parade as we join with the community in celebrating Bermuda’s 400th anniversary and 130 years of policing in Bermuda. In keeping with the theme for this year’s Police Week – ‘Our Youth … Our Commitment’ – the six student winners of the 2009 Police Week schools poster competition will be invited onboard as our special guests.
The Eastern Criminal Investigation Unit assisted by the Eastern Community Action Team seized 30 cultivated cannabis plants Tuesday afternoon, which were located on secluded ground adjacent to St. George’s Golf Course.
A 28 year old Pembroke man was one of the men arrested in connection with the shooting outside Southside Cinema on Friday, November 13th 2009. He was subsequently released on Police bail. This simply means that at this stage the 28 year old Pembroke man has not been charged with any crime. When an individual is released on Police bail, there are no restrictions on their ability to travel overseas; however they are bound to reappear at a Police Station on a specified date. Travel restrictions can only be made by a judge/magistrate once a suspect has been placed before the court and charged with an offence.
The Commissioner of Police is pleased to announce that His Excellency the Governor, Sir Richard Gozney KCMG, has announced the appointment of Assistant Commissioner Michael Jackman as the new Deputy Commissioner of Police with effect from the 16th December, 2009.
The Bermuda Police Service Financial Crime Unit continues to advise members of the public not to respond to unsolicited correspondence (via e-mail, fax, letter or telephone call) which claims to offer an amazing prize or cash reward – only if the ‘lucky winner’ is willing to send an amount of money first to ‘secure the winnings’ or other ‘promising opportunity.’
