Confirmed Firearm Incident Under Investigation: No Reported Injuries [Updated]

Shortly after 11:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 16th, 2023, police officers were dispatched to the area of Court and Elliot Streets, Pembroke, following a report of gunshots heard in that vicinity.
Officers conducted a search and recovered one spent shell.
There were no reports of anyone being injured. Subsequent checks at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital indicated no one had visited the facility seeking treatment for gunshot wounds.
An investigation into this incident has now commenced.
There were several people at nearby establishments at the time of the incident and anyone with any information on this matter is asked to call the main police number, 295-0011.

Update: Monday, 18th September - The investigation continues into the confirmed firearms incident which occurred in the area of Court Street and Elliot Street, Pembroke shortly after 11:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 16th 2023.
While forensic evidence was recovered at the scene, officers are still keen on hearing from members of public, particularly anyone who was among the large group of people who were at the location at the time the shooting occurred.
The suspects are described as two males wearing dark clothing, travelling on a dark coloured motorcycle.
One of the suspects reportedly discharged a firearm in the direction of a group of people who were gathered on the sidewalk.
They then rode off in the direction of Till’s Hill.

Around 1:10 a.m. on Wednesday, September 13th, 2023, Police responded to reports of gunshots in the area of Tribe Road Number 5, just off of Ord Road in Paget.
The extent of his injuries are not known at this time, however he was conscious and breathing.

Teenager Arrested After Attempting to Elude Police on Stolen Motorcycle

Shortly before 8:00 p.m. on Monday, September 11th, 2023, police officers were on mobile patrol duty in the area of Glebe Road, Pembroke, when they observed a motorcycle with a defective rear light turn onto St. Monica’s Road.
Upon noticing the officers, the bike rider sped off and attempted to elude police.
Officers pursued the vehicle and the suspect, a nineteen- year-old male, eventually abandoned his bid to escape as he approached Penhurst Park on the North Shore Road in Smith’s Parish.
The suspect was arrested for failing to stop for police and dangerous driving. Subsequent checks of the motorcycle revealed it was fitted with a false license plate and that it had been reported stolen, in August, this year.
Two Vehicle City of Hamilton Collision at Reid Street, King Street Junction

Around 1:05pm Friday, 8th September 2023, police and other first responders were dispatched to a report of a two vehicle collision on Reid Street at the junction with King Street in the City of Hamilton.
Initial information suggests that a male on an auxiliary cycle was headed down King Street, when he attempted to make a left hand turn onto Reid Street, when he lost control of the cycle and collided with a heavy truck.
The male cyclist has been transported to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital for treatment of suspected chest injuries. The truck driver was not reported to be injured.
Traffic headed into town is being diverted down Flora Duffy Lane and along Crow Lane onto Front Street. Traffic headed out of the city is being restricted to a single lane down King Street.
Traffic delays are to be expected for at least 90 minutes.

Inquiries Continue: Reported Two Car Collision in Smith's Parish

Inquiries continue regarding a reported two car collision that occurred around 3:10pm Tuesday, 5th September 2023, on Verdmont Road in Smith’s parish.
The two cars involved were each travelling in opposite directions at the time.
Three people were transported via ambulance to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital for medical assessment.
The driver of one of the cars, said to be a 20-year-old Hamilton parish woman, was treated and later discharged from hospital.
It is understood that the driver of the other car, said to be a 45-year-old Smith’s parish man, was not hurt.
However, his passengers, apparently two 9-year-old girls, received medical care at the hospital before being discharged.
Both damaged cars were ultimately towed away, after the scene was processed.
Any witnesses to this collision, that have not already come forward, are encouraged to call 211.
Retirement of Superintendent Sean Field-Lament

Please join us in saying, thank you and farewell to Superintendent Sean Field-Lament who retires from the Bermuda Police Service having given 38
years of faithful service to our community.
Having joined the BPS as a Constable on 31 May 1985, Sean or, SFL, as he’s fondly known around these parts, steadily moved up the ranks, ultimately being appointed Superintendent in 2012.
While he served in almost every department of the BPS he is most fondly remembered for his fearless, no nonsense, approach as a narcotics investigator. His last posting was as Head of the Intelligence Unit where his vast experience as an investigator, was key to dismantling several illicit operations as well as the arrest of some of Bermuda’s most dangerous criminals.
An avid rugby player, Sean served as Captain of the senior men’s national squad and went on to become president of the Bermuda Rugby Football Association upon hanging up his boots. He was instrumental in developing Beyond Rugby Bermuda.
A programme which supports and inspires youth to reach their full potential on and off of the rugby field.
Commissioner of Police Darrin Simons comments: “Superintendent Field-Lament will be fondly remembered for his investigative acumen and his big, kind heart. Around the boardroom table he was often insightful, with an uncanny ability to see the big picture and his very spirited approach. Like all true ruggers, Sean was a “Bruiser”, but one with a soft centre.
“He is well respected amongst his peers and an asset to our community.”
“Please join me in wishing him a very long, happy and well deserved retirement.”

15 BPS Detectives Complete Management of Serious & Complex Investigations Course

Fifteen experienced detectives from the Bermuda Police Service (BPS) recently completed a two-week-long, Management of Serious and Complex Investigations Course, at BPS Training School, Prospect.
The detectives attending the course are of various ranks from Detective Constable (DC) and Detective Seargent (DS), through to Detective Inspector (DI). The course is aligned to the UK College of Policing Authorised Professional Practice and the Professionalising Investigation Program (PIP) Level 2.
It was delivered by David Keech and Neil Prunnell. Mr. Keech and Mr. Prunnell are both former Detective Sergeants from the Greater Manchester Police (GMP). Between them they possess over 60 years of policing experience and have worked on some of GMP’s most serious and complex investigations.
They are experienced trainers who regularly deliver a variety of different PIP courses to a number of different police forces in the UK.
Sherwin Joseph, Acting Detective Superintendent, stated: “The PIP Level 2 program, forms part of the training regimen of the Crime Division of the Bermuda Police Service. It is geared toward professionalization of investigators, succession planning and building investigative capacity.”
“This training will prove invaluable to increasing the investigative capacity of the BPS and its ability to solve crime and have perpetrators put before the courts as we continue to work to make Bermuda safer.”

Marco Warren Road Fatality Witness Appeal Renewed

The Bermuda Police Service is once again reaching out to the public for any information they may have on the circumstances surrounding the death Marco Warren.
Mr. Warren was the victim of a hit and run collision which occurred on North Shore Road just west of Trinity Church Road, Hamilton Parish around 3:15 a.m. on Sunday, May 14th, 2023.
Mr. Warren, who was a new father at the time of his death, was well known in the footballing community and also as a Programme Coordinator with the Ministry of Youth and Sport.
Police continue to follow a number of leads as the investigation into his death remains ongoing.
However, we still require the assistance of the public as we attempt to progress the matter and bring whomever is responsible to justice. Ultimately bringing closure to Marco’s family and loved ones.

Jason Mello Murder Investigation Remains Active Seven Years Later

Detectives are renewing their appeal for information in connection with the murder of 25-year-old Jason Mello.
Mr. Mello was fatally shot around 7:35pm Friday 19th August 2016, seven years ago, whilst on Bandroom Lane, Pembroke. The gunman is believed to have entered Bandroom Lane, wearing a full face visor helmet and heavy dark coloured winter clothing that would have been unusual on a hot August evening.
The gunman is also believed to have parked a motorcycle higher up on Bandroom Lane, before walking down to where he shot Mr. Mello several times. The gunman then returned to the parked motorcycle and rode back out through the St. Monica’s Road area.
Investigators continue to appeal for witnesses, or anyone who may have any information, no matter how insignificant it may seem, to call Detective Sergeant Dean Martin of the Serious Crime Unit on 717-2074 and 247-1285, or contact a police officer they know.

Inquiries Underway After 104 Cannabis Plants Seized in St. George’s

On Sunday, 13th August 2023, Bermuda Police Service (BPS) officers from the Police Support Unit of the Tactical Operations Division, conducted an exercise targeting illegal cannabis cultivation at a site in the Southside, St. George’s area.
During the exercise, BPS officers uprooted and seized a total of 104 fully grown cannabis plants under the Misuse of Drugs Act. At this time no arrests have been made in connection to this controlled drug seizure.
Inquiries are underway and anyone that has any information that may assist the BPS is asked to call 295-0011, 211 or speak with a police officer they know.
